Competitive sports is about commitment and a willingness to learn.
I am committed to teaching the following:
Good sportsmanship is listed twice on purpose. Life is a lot like sports... like football. You get hit, you get dirty, you win some, you lose some, and sometimes it doesn't seem fair. You get up and try again. We'll try to teach these kids to be gracious in victory, humble in defeat, and most importantly... when life knocks them around, to be able to brush themselves off and get back up, learn from it, and get back at it.
Parents... there is an expectation of commitment on you and your child's part when you sign up. My fellow coaches and I definitely want to work with these kids, and we are here to have fun! Having said that, please keep in mind that we all volunteered to be coaches or the "Team Mom"... but we aren't a babysitting service, plain and simple.
In the past, I have always said the Lord's Prayer after each practice and before and after each game. These days I [have to] leave that up to the player's to initiate. I am a Christian, I believe that Jesus Christ is my Savior and the only way to Heaven (The Father) is through Him (The Son). I will not preach to your kids, that is not my responsibility nor purpose in coaching, but I am here to help you or your kids in any way I can. I do want to be sensitive to today's multicultural fabric and families that practice other faiths. Having said all that, here is The Lord's Prayer.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, Forever and Ever.
Amen
