Experience / Employment History

March 2001 - Present - Artifex Business Identity Development

Title: Web Developer
Responsibilities: As a Web Developer for Artifex, my responsibilities range from front-end user interface design, to back-end relational database design and development. I am an SEO Search Engine Optimization expert, and a Website Optimization expert. My main development tools consist of: Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Dreamweaver 4, Dreamweaver MX, Dreamweaver UltrDev 4, and UltraEdit.

My core skillset used while at Artifex includes but is not limited to: HTML, JavaScript, XHTML, Active Server Pages [ASP], ActiveX Data Objects [ADO], Collaborative Data Objects for NT Services [CDONTS], Cold Fusion Markup Language [CFML], SQL, Database Design and Normalization, testing methodologies, and I have provided support for applications written in [JSP].

At Artifex I am referred to as "the resident Cascading Style Sheets and SEO Search Engine Optimization expert". My favorites are hand coding in ASP or Cold Fusion, using my SEO Search Engine Optimization skills to achieve naturally high rankings, and pushing the limits of CSS in the newest (near w3c standards compliant) browsers such as Netscape, Mozilla, [Phoenix, Firebird,(now Firefox)] Opera, Konqueror, Camino, and Internet Explorer. I am excited about the use of CSS for entire site layout (see espn.com or wirednews.com for examples)! I am very good with creating or being given a PSD Comp and turning it into a standards compliant database driven website. If you would like to know more about the benefits of switching your website to a CSS driven layout, read the interview with ESPN's Mike Davidson. The ESPN site gets (get this)... 1 billion page views a month. Read it, it will open your eyes to the benefits of CSS.

I have written unique database driven CMS (Content Management Systems) in both ASP and Cold Fusion for several clients while at Artifex. These systems allow the client the ability to dynamically generate entire web pages, sections of web pages, and email newsletters without having to know any HTML. The clients have been very pleased with the power and ease of use of these Content Management Systems. Also, my search engine optimization [SEO] strategy consistently produces good if not great results with no money paid to the search engines for placement. I consider myself a Search Engine Optimization Expert, or SEO Consultant.

I focus on usability issues in website design, and on the next wave of technology improvements as suggested by the World Wide Web Consortium [W3C]. I make a sincere effort for my websites to work on ALL platforms and browsers [user-agents], and concentrate specifically on forward compatability... that is, designing with future web browsers and technology in mind, while not alienating the older browsers.

I am very well versed in the usability issues, web design, and coding requirements needed to meet or exceed the standards set forth by the Federal Government in [Section 508], regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act [ADA].

I also relate with clients on a one-to-one basis to resolve web site modifications, additions, hosting/server issues, or scope of work changes as they arise. I really enjoy this job as there is such a wide variety of challenges faced daily, and a variety of my skills utilized.

June 2000 - Present - Highline Community College

Title: Instructor
Responsibilities: I teach classes on a part-time basis, specifically, extended learning classes which are held in the evenings and on weekends. I began teaching extended learning classes at Highline Community College, Federal Way Campus, in June of 2000. I consistently receive high marks from my students, the faculty, and staff, for my teaching methods and for my willingness to help whenever needed. I enjoy passing along information to my students that they aren't going to find in a book, and then at some point in the class, seeing them finally start to "get it".

Currently I am instructing the following classes:

The WDDI class is a unique program that Highline Community College currently offers as an ongoing internship, there is nothing else like it in the Seattle area. It is a hands on Web Development Internship that was co-founded by myself and another instructor, and is a culmination of the classes listed above, as well as the JavaScript, ASP, and XML classes. We will be getting into PHP soon as well. The WDDI program began in January 2001 and we are steaming into our 2nd year!

The WDDI class develops live websites for small local businesses. We manage approximately 16 interns at any given time. We bring guests into class to discuss site requirements, storyboard the site, and then supervise while the interns build the sites. With the varying degrees of skill from the interns, varying degrees of flexibilty from our clients, and juggling the requirements of our shared hosting environment... the WDDI class always presents a challenge!

November 1999 - Present - TenTonWeb, LLC

Title: Consultant, Lead Designer, Web Developer
Responsibilities: My responsibilities at TenTonWeb include: consulting, scheduling, project delegation, designing and developing websites, graphics creation, database programming, server-side and client-side coding, search engine registration, billing, and determining price for the project.

After much study and personal experience, I have formulated my own "Search Engine Optimization Strategy" that consistently produces a good if not great search engine ranking. My Search Engine Optimization Strategy DOES NOT require any payment to the search engines for a ranking. Try a search at any of the search engines listed below using the term Jacksonville Web Design. Keep in mind that NONE of these search engines were paid ANYTHING for these results...

TenTonWeb.com will show up in the return as:
-----[ Jacksonville Web Design TenTonWeb.com ]-----

You will see that TenTonWeb is on the first page out of over 1 million results... quite a few the #1 return, quite a few on the opening page multiple times! This is because of my understanding and definition of the target audience, the target market area, and understanding how the search engines work. I cannot stress enough the importance of having a proper Search Engine Optimization Strategy and how that directly relates to attaining your search engine placement goals... some people expend a lot of effort with little results, I prefer a little effort with excellent results... at no cost!

Just to show you that this is not a fluke... try a search at Google, Yahoo!, Alta Vista, or AllTheWeb for the phrase RESUME ASP. You will see that this page is about number 4 out of thousands of returns for that phrase (over 3 million at Google)! No... not a fluke. This page shows up in the return as:
James H. Summer, Jr. Resume Cold Fusion Developer, Resume ASP...
